Save Old Cleburne
Cleburne was founded following the Civil War during the height of
the Chisholm Trail Cattle Drives. Many of the founders of the town
served under their beloved General Patrick Cleburne and the
decision was made to honor him by naming the town after their
The Town grew rapidly and soon became a thriving community.
The Rail Road soon came to Cleburne and a new industry boomed.
The Santa Fee Rail Yard and Shops provided many jobs in the area.
Many homes were built during these early years and several of
them remain today. These homes belonged to some of the most
influential people in the area in the early 1900's.
"Save Old Cleburne Inc." is a historic preservation group consisting
of homeowners,business owners and interested individuals in and
around Cleburne, Texas. We are dedicated to the preservation of
the history of Cleburne and the preservation of its structures,
history and culture.
One of the main common objectives is promoting the preservation
of Cleburne's Older homes,Neighborhoods and Historic Downtown.
Soc members have long believed that a Historic District Plan is
needed as a primary method of preserving Historic Cleburne. We
have spent more than $20,000.00 on research and documentation
for historic surveys.
These surveys were compiled and revealed that four
concentrations of older structures could be defined as representing
historic districts. Those areas are:
Anglin, Robinson and Wilhite Streets
Praire,Forrest, Bellevue and Featherston Streets
Buffalo to Granbury Street
Save Old Cleburne is actively pursuing Homeowners interested in
a Historic Designation marker for their Home. The following criteria
shall be considered when determining if a nominated property is
eligible for Consideration:
1.Significance in history, architecture, archeology and /or culture.
2. Association with events that have made a significant contribution
to the patterns of local, regional, state or national history.
3. Association with lives of persons significant in our past.
4. Embodiment of the distinctive characteristics of a type,period or
method of construction.
5.Representative work of a master designer,builder or craftsman.
6. An Established and familiar visual feature of the City.
If you think your home falls into one of these areas, please fill out
our Historic Designation Application.
If your application qualifies , Save Old Cleburne will submit the
application and pay the $150.00 application fee on your behalf.

SOC's other activities and accomplishments over the years include
helping preserve the Amtrak service for the City of Cleburne,
Establishing a Research area in the Layland Museum, presenting
awards of merit recognizing the restoration of historic
buildings,replacement of park benches on the courthouse
square,scholarships to students and Jr. Historians, Historic Driving
Tour book, funding for the Buffalo Creek Project,working on the
restoration of the Market Square ,and restoration of the Little Old
This year we will be working at Historic Downtown Districts and
National Register application for Historic Downtown.
